Dear Son:

You are leaving home to travel to a distant land and take the place of a weary warrior who needs a break. You are leaving to serve in a sometimes thankless war where people in your own country mock you and question your duty.

I’m proud; I’m terrified.

My son. Bone of my bone, flesh of my flesh, heart of my heart.

When your soul gets weary, close your eyes and think of me and I’m there. My heart beats within yours and when you find yourself scared, listen to that beat and I’ll be with you.

When you find yourself missing the warmth of your homeland, bow your head and ask God to help you find a memory. Trace it over with your finger in the sky and know that I’m with you doing the same thing.

When you are lonely look up to the stars. I’m looking at them too. I’m singing “Fly me to the moon.” Listen with you heart and you will hear a familiar tune that comforts you.

When you are sick close your eyes and feel my hand. It’s there stroking your hair, wiping your brow, and letting you know that this too shall pass.

I love you so much son. I’m honored that you are so willing to serve and so ready to give of yourself for many you will never meet or who will never know of your kindness.

My heart and soul are bursting with pride.

God bless you and be by your side always. Soon we will be together again.

Mom
